Carter
Kaplan is Associate Professor of English at Mountain State
University in Beckley, West Virginia. He received his
M.A. from the University of Toledo and his Ph.D. from
the University of North Dakota. He has taught at universities
in Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, New Jersey, New York City,
Pennsylvania, and Scotland. Carter has also taught in
senior and junior high schools in Ohio and New York City.
His articles have appeared in SubStance, Melville Society
Extracts, Extrapolation, and English Journal. He was among
the founding directors of the Montana Conference on Intellectual
Freedom, and now is on the Board of Trustees of the New
Jersey College English Association. In addition to writing,
Carter plays guitar and piano, and he is usually to be
found traveling, mountain climbing, talking, or looking
at buildings
