GAMELAN/KECAK
CORE ENSEMBLE - 15 People - 1st work cycle March-June, with possible
2nd cycle July - November -percussionists, gamelan musicians, strong
voices, with a leaning toward powerful physical performance. MYTHIC THEATRE TROUPE - 15 Additional People - 1st work cycle April-June, with possible 2nd cycle July - November: -acrobats/singers/dancers/physical-theatre performers with music & rhythm skills. The 30 performers will rehearse and perform in the Bay Area from March through May, then travel to Bali to train and perform in cross-cultural exchange from June 15 - 30, 2005. REQUIRED SKILLS FOR ALL PERFORMERS: Metronome-accurate rhythmic clarity and a listening sensitivity are Essential. Experience with rhythmic ensemble interplay and improvisation is Vital. Ability to read a melodic musical score is a plus, though not mandatory. You must have a strong desire to experiment with your voice AS WELL AS a strong willingness to be very physical, sincere, and generous in performance. Since some performances are interactive, sharing this powerful community experience with hundreds of people, all performers must be able to dynamically lead a large section of people on their vocal part within the larger complexities of the interlocking rhythmic texture. AUDITIONS - WHAT TO BRING: Any portable instruments that you play (world/western/whatever). Come prepared to participate that (those) instrument(s) AND YOUR VOICE in larger group exercises. Any recordings, videos, DVD's of your work that you would like to share with us, in order to know you better. Loose fitting comfortable clothing and your own water supply. We will be moving around quite a bit. Bring some kind of picture of yourself (it doesn't matter what kind or size, it is for our organizational process, not your beauty). Bring your resume. Be ready to write down the answers to the following Questions: 1)Other than the audition-required performance skills, what resources do you offer a community-centric project such as this? Think logistical/organizational talents (ie- Administrative talent? Costuming? Prop master? Carpentry skills? Good with engines? Enjoy cooking? Body work? Other technological, performance and musical talents? Whatever comes to your mind that could serve the community effort toward fluid functionality.) 2) Similar to the first question, but then not quite: What is YOUR ROLE, or Possibility of Role(s), in relationship to a fully functioning, empowered, and successful performing arts troupe? Success emotionally, spiritually, artistically, and financially. |

PEOPLE VOICE performs chant inspired by the traditional Balinese theatre
form of Kecak [KET jak], a highly dynamic, rhythmic-interlocking,
ritualized chant Way-of-Being. Our Chant includes vocal rhythmic elements
and drum language from Human Beat Box to various world music traditions
and experimental techniques. A
Chant Team of (5 People) will teach Kecak in Austin, Tx., March 18,
19. The Gamelan (15 people) will perform in Atlanta, Ga. (April 30th-May
8th). The whole ensemble (30 people) will perform in the Bay Area during
May and early June, to test our mettle
before our journey to Bali on June 10th. |
